Kallang Was More Than a Location
Kallang is familiar to many of us today because of the Sports Hub, Bendemeer MRT, Kallang Junction and the surrounding industrial and creative spaces.
But long before today’s roads, buildings and train lines, the area around Kallang Basin looked very different. It was shaped by water, reclamation, kampongs, trade routes and Singapore’s constant reinvention.
Here are three things you may not know about Kallang.
1. Kallang Basin Was Once Much Larger
Before land reclamation changed the area, Kallang Basin extended much further than many people realise.
Parts of today’s Singapore Sports Hub, former Kallang Airport area, Tanjong Rhu, Kallang Bahru and the area south of Nicoll Highway were once connected to a much larger water body.
Places carry memory.
Even when the landscape changes, the story remains.
2. Bendemeer Was Once Near the Edge of the Basin
At its greatest extent, Kallang Basin once reached as far north as today’s Bendemeer Road.
That makes the area around Bendemeer more than just a familiar neighbourhood stop. It sits close to a historic landscape shaped by water, settlement and urban renewal.
3. JAB Design’s Own Kallang Story
Today, JAB Design is located at 1 Kallang Junction, just a short walk from Bendemeer MRT Station.
Our connection with Kallang goes back many years. Before becoming an independent agency, JAB Design operated as a specialist firm of Splash Productions at nearby 21 Cavan Road.
Following our spin-off, we moved to premises near Kallang MRT Station. After the pandemic reshaped the way many businesses worked, we found ourselves back in this part of Kallang — just minutes from where our journey first began.
Sometimes, the journey comes full circle.
Ours brought us back to the neighbourhood we’ve proudly called home for years.
