Did you know that the Kallang Basin was once Singapore’s front door to the world? Long before Marina Bay’s skyline became iconic, this sheltered water body at the mouth of the Kallang River was a bustling hub where seafarers, traders, and local communities converged.

From kampongs on stilts and floating attap houses to grand national events and today’s waterfront sports precinct, Kallang Basin has witnessed Singapore’s remarkable transformation – quietly holding stories of heritage, resilience, and reinvention beneath its calm waters.

DID YOU KNOW? Much of the lands around Kallang Basin are the result of extensive land reclamation.

“Some of the land areas of Singapore were reclaimed from the rivers and the seas to create new land in order to support a growing population in the early days. This is known as land reclamation.

The HDB also carried out reclamation projects to build flats so that Singaporeans can have a roof over their heads. The earliest reclamation project was focused on Kallang Basin.

Before the reclamation in the early 1960s, Kallang Basin used to be surrounded by squatter huts where residents lived in unsanitary conditions.
